High ROAS doesn't always mean growth.
Optimizing an account to make ROAS look good can be the exact opposite of optimizing a business for growth.
The efficiency bias
When the only goal is to raise ROAS, platforms tend to concentrate on users and products most likely to convert. That can improve efficiency while reducing incremental reach, volume or penetration into new audiences.
What to look at beyond ROAS
- Total revenue and incremental revenue.
- Order volume and new customers.
- Margin, average order value and product mix.
- CVR and traffic quality.
- Paid Media's contribution to total business.
- Branded vs. non-branded evolution.
The right question
The question isn't “how do we increase ROAS?” It's “what combination of efficiency and scale maximizes real business value?” Performance Marketing becomes strategic when it stops optimizing an isolated metric.
